Olympiakos Piraeus

José Luis Mendilibar took Olympiacos through the 2023/24 Europa Conference League to a final against Fiorentina, and a single goal was enough to win it 1-0 — the first European trophy any Greek club had taken in a major UEFA competition.

The club itself grew out of a merger in Piraeus, in 1925, of two local sports associations, formally registered by a Piraeus court that May under decision No. 1247. Mihalis Manouskos had chaired the founding meeting the year before and became the first president.

Home matches are played at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, rebuilt and reopened in 2004 for the Athens Olympics. The ground had carried a velodrome as far back as 1895, then an earlier football stadium from 1960.

Supporters call the team Thrylos — the Legend — a name that took hold during the dominant 1950s, and the red-and-white shirt reads the same way: red for the will to win, white for something closer to honour. Olympiacos has become the most decorated club in Greek football, with 48 league titles and 29 Greek Cups, both records. Five Greek Super Cups sit alongside them.

The fiercest fixture is with Panathinaikos, the Derby of the Eternal Enemies — a divide drawn by class and geography as much as football, Olympiacos rooted in Piraeus's working port, Panathinaikos in Athens's establishment. The two have met more than 230 times since 1925. Olympiacos leads 92 wins to 58.

No one has pulled on the shirt more often than Predrag Đorđević, the Serbian midfielder who made 493 appearances. He wore it from 1996 to 2009. The scoring record sits further back, with Giorgos Sideris, who found the net 224 times — still the highest tally in the club's history.
