Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium

Formerly: Neo Phaliron Velodrome

Karaiskakis did not begin as a football ground at all. It only became home to a pitch in 1964, when the track was stripped out and the arena renamed for Georgios Karaiskakis.

The stadium standing today is younger than it looks. In 2003 the old bowl was pulled down completely and rebuilt from the ground up in time for the Athens Olympics, reopening on 30 June 2004. Unlike its predecessors, it went up with no running track at all, football only, every tier under cover, with a direct link through to Faliro metro station.

The ground carries a heavier memory than most. On 8 February 1981, after Olympiacos beat AEK 6-0, a crush at Gate 7 as fans left killed 21 people.

Olympiacos have called it home continuously since the 2004 rebuild. European finals have found their way here too: Chelsea beat Real Madrid in a replay to lift the 1971 Cup Winners' Cup, and Manchester City saw off Sevilla on penalties in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup.
