Olympiacos Piraeus beat Atromitos 1-0 in the opening match of the Superleague 1 regular season at the Karaiskakis Stadium on Saturday evening. The hosts dominated possession but struggled to convert their pressure into a second goal, until D. Carmo found the net in the 82nd minute to secure all three points.
Ayoub El Kaabi had a penalty saved in the 80th minute, a moment that kept the score level and added to the tension. Carmo made no mistake from open play two minutes later, slotting home after Olympiacos had finally worked enough space in the box. It was a late breakthrough that reflected a match where chances were plentiful but finishing was not.
The game was fraught with disciplinary issues. Rodinei collected a second yellow card in the 90+1 minute and was sent off, leaving Olympiacos to see out the final moments a man down. Atromitos also saw their share of cautions, with six yellows between them, while Olympiacos picked up three. The referee lost control of the encounter as fatigue set in.
Olympiacos enjoyed 69 per cent of the ball and registered 22 shots, 10 of which were on target. They created eight big chances and won 14 corners, yet the tally of goals does not reflect that dominance. Atromitos managed just five shots with one on target and zero big chances, their 31 per cent possession matched by 55 clearances and eight saves from their goalkeeper.
The result puts Olympiacos on six points from two games, sitting fourth in the table. Atromitos remain winless with two defeats, occupying 11th place. The hosts will hope to build momentum, while the visitors need a response if they are to avoid trouble at this stage.
