PAOK

Refugees from Constantinople carried little away when the Asia Minor catastrophe scattered them from the city in 1922, but they kept the double-headed eagle of Byzantium and the Constantinople Patriarchate, and four years later, on 20 March 1926, they fixed it to the crest of a football club founded in Thessaloniki. They called it the Pan-Thessalonian Athletic Club of Constantinopolitans, shortened over time to PAOK, and the eagle on the badge gave the club its nickname, Dikefalos — the Twin-Headed.

Black and white have stayed the colours since. Home is Toumba, rebuilt and reopened in 2021 with room for 28,701, where matches against Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens carry little warmth on either side.

The league has been won three times, in 1976, 1985 and 2019 — the last of those ending a 34-year wait, so long that when the title finally landed it read as the story of the season rather than one more line on a list. It arrived alongside the Greek Cup that same year, the two together forming a domestic double.

The Cup itself dates back further, to 1972, and has returned to Thessaloniki six times since — seven in total.
