PAOK's home in the Toumba district was not built by a contractor on a budget — supporters covered much of the cost themselves, through a public lottery, direct donations and unpaid labour, while the Greek ministries of culture and defence provided the land and part of the funding. It opened on 6 September 1959 with a friendly against AEK, built to a design by architect Minas Trelebelas and engineer Antonis Triglianos.

The name that stuck, Toumba, has nothing to do with a sponsor deal — it is simply the district the ground sits in, off Mikras Asias street; the club has kept the official title Stadium PAOK throughout. What has changed is how many people fit inside it. Terracing once pushed capacity past 41,000, and the record crowd, 45,252, arrived on 19 December 1976 for a goalless draw with AEK. Safety rules forced the switch to all-seating in 1998, and the number on the turnstiles has been falling ever since, down to the current 28,701.

The ground has been rebuilt around the fans rather than replaced. A roof went up over the stands in 1985; a four-storey block behind the west stand, with offices, VIP boxes, a press centre and dressing rooms, followed in 2003–2004. A further round of work between 2012 and 2015, under owner Ivan Savvidis, brought the dressing rooms, press facilities and VIP areas up to UEFA's requirements. The pitch itself is natural grass.
