About

The Stoiximan Super League operates as the highest level of professional football in Greece, situated at Level 1 within the national pyramid. Following a structural transformation in 2006, the competition moved from direct administration by the Hellenic Football Federation to a private cooperative model run by the participating clubs. This shift replaced the long-standing Alpha Ethniki era, creating a distinct identity for the modern tournament.

The current structure is defined by a split-season format designed to determine silverware and European places simultaneously. The regular season consists of 26 matches played in a double round-robin. Subsequently, the table divides into three separate groups for a second phase. The top four teams contest the Championship Play-offs, carrying over points to determine the league title, while those finishing fifth through eighth battle for the final European qualification spot. Relegation is determined among the bottom six teams, with the two lowest finishers dropping to Super League 2. Promotion to the top flight typically goes to the winners of the two geographical groups in the second tier.

Historical dominance has been concentrated among a few clubs, with Olympiacos holding 48 titles across all eras. AEK Athens is the current reigning champion, having secured the 2025–26 title. Notably, the 1987–88 season remains unique, as AEL (Larissa) became the only provincial club outside the Athens and Thessaloniki metropolitan areas to win the championship. The league underwent significant reforms in 2019, reducing the team count and introducing the current three-group playoff system.

The primary distinction between this league and the Greek Cup lies in the format. The Super League determines the best team over the course of a season through standings, whereas the Cup is a knockout tournament. The season opener features the Greek Super Cup, a single-match fixture between the league champion and the Greek Cup winner, or the runner-up if the double has been achieved.
