The Kalamata Municipal Stadium holds 4,496 people, which puts it among the smaller grounds in Greek professional football, and it belongs to the town rather than to the club. Kalamata sits on the Messenian gulf, in the south-west corner of the Peloponnese, far enough from Athens and Thessaloniki that the football here has always been the town's own business.

The club that plays there did not grow out of one set of supporters. In 1967 the military junta ordered five clubs in the town — among them Apollon Kalamata and Olympiakos Kalamata — to be folded into a single side, and the crest it was given carried a phoenix, the emblem the colonels used for themselves. The bird stayed on the shirt until 1974, the year the dictatorship fell. The same season brought the second Beta Ethniki title, the first having come in 1972.

The 1990s belonged to the Papadopoulos years. Between 1992 and 2000 the club climbed the divisions and looked abroad for players, bringing in Derek Boateng and Peter Ofori-Quaye when few Greek clubs of that size were doing so. Its own academy produced Nikos Liberopoulos, who went on to a career well beyond Messenia.

Then came the fall, and a long one: Kalamata were winning the fourth tier in 2011, the third in 2021. The 2025–26 season put them back where they had been half a century earlier, with the Beta Ethniki title and the Super League Greece 2 Super Cup in the same year.

The derby with Paniliakos, across the western Peloponnese, remains the fixture that fills the ground. Black and white, a stadium in the middle of a provincial town, four and a half thousand who mostly know each other — the Black Storm has never been anything but a Kalamata affair.
