County Ground

The County Ground in Northampton carries the weight of a football era that ended before many supporters were born. When Northampton Town played there, the fixture list was less about opposition and more about survival on a surface that refused to behave like a proper football pitch.

What made the ground unusual was simply its layout. The cricket pitch ran straight through the centre of the football field, meaning the boundary line dictated where the game could be played. A shot hit too hard might not reach the far corner but would instead bounce back into play over the cricket boundary. Players would look for an opening on the flank and suddenly find the touchline had moved.

The capacity of 6,500 meant the ground never felt vast. You could hear the individual shouts from the touchline, and every mistake was celebrated or mourned without the echo of a larger arena. After the move to Sixfields in 1994, the ground fell quiet. Cricket remained, but the noise changed.

It is easy to compare the County Ground to Swindon or Taunton, but the comparison is misleading. This was never about grandeur or capacity. It was about playing football on a strip of grass that belonged to another game, learning to adapt when the boundary moved beneath your feet. It simply existed, week after week, through the lower divisions, until the cricket club outgrew its shared arrangement and the football team found somewhere else to play.
