Estadio Departamental Libertad

The pull that swept away San Juan de Pasto's stadium name in 1957 had nothing to do with football. Estadio Departamental Libertad opened in November 1954 as Estadio 13 de junio, marking the inauguration of General Rojas Pinilla, and kept that name only until the dictatorship fell — the rechristening as Libertad followed the political shift, not a renovation or a title win.

Since then the ground has carried more than Deportivo Pasto's league fixtures. It has staged Colombian top-flight finals in 2002, 2006 and 2012, Copa Colombia finals in 2009 and 2012, and second-division deciders in 1998, 2010 and 2011 — a run of finals that few provincial grounds in the country can match. Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana nights have also passed through here, along with the opening ceremony of the 2000 Colombian National Games.

Off the pitch, the stadium has doubled as a concert venue, drawing crowds for Vicente Fernández, Los Tigres del Norte and Marc Anthony — bookings that speak to Pasto's pull as a regional hub in Nariño, far south near the Ecuadorian border. The pitch remains natural grass, and the ground sits on the Avenida Panamericana at the southern exit of the city, a location that ties it to the highway running the length of the country.
