FirstOntario Centre
Hamilton, Canada
Formerly: Copps Coliseum, FirstOntario Centre, Hamilton Arena
Inside, the sheet stays frozen for hockey, but the floor comes down for basketball and everything else that needs a flat surface. The band is the Toronto Rock, who play in the National Lacrosse League, and the new arrivals are the AHL side and the PWHL team, both due to start next season. You can see the renovation in the way the light hits the upper decks and in the way the concourses are wider now.
It has been here since the eighties, which means it has hosted everything from curling championships to wrestling matches. The biggest crowd it ever pulled in was for a tournament match, and that was thirty years ago. The hotel sits on top, which is a feature that some people find useful.
There is a big screen outside, and the name is in red letters. The maps on the wall show the gates arranged in a circle, and the main entrance is on Lake Shore Boulevard. The parking lot is across the street, and the bus stop is nearby. When the weather turns, the building keeps its head. It does not look like a place that will change its mind about what it is, which is useful when you are used to the city around you changing everything.
