The Bulldogs name has lived in two cities inside a decade.

The Belleville Bulls had worn that name since 1981 before Michael Andlauer bought the team in March 2015 and moved it into FirstOntario Centre for the 2015–16 season, rebranding it Hamilton. The J. Ross Robertson Cup in 2018, beating the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, and again in 2022, beating the Windsor Spitfires. The 2022 team pushed further than any Hamilton side before it, reaching the Memorial Cup final and falling to the Saint John Sea Dogs 6–3 — the closest the Bulldogs have come to junior hockey's national title.

Robert Thomas passed through that era before his Calder Trophy season in the NHL, one of a run of Bulldogs graduates — Connor McMichael, Mason McTavish, Arber Xhekaj among them — who left Hamilton for regular NHL minutes. None of them is remembered in the city quite like Thomas, whose two seasons there are the reference point whenever the club's junior pipeline comes up.
