Bobby Orr arrived in Oshawa in 1962, the year the Generals came back after a nine-year absence, and by the time he left in 1966. The gap he stepped into traced back to a fire that gutted Hambly Arena on 15 September 1953, destroying the team's equipment along with the building. General manager Wren Blair kept the organisation alive through the hiatus by running the Oshawa Truckmen, later the Whitby Dunlops, who won the Allan Cup twice before the Generals name returned to the ice, first at Maple Leaf Gardens, then in Bowmanville, before settling into the new Oshawa Civic Auditorium on 11 December 1964.

The club had been founded in 1937 and named for its sponsor, General Motors of Canada, after passing through earlier names such as the Majors and the Red Devils. Between 1938 and 1944 it won the J. Ross Robertson Cup seven years running, a run built during the same seasons it also took the Memorial Cup in 1939, 1940 and 1944. Both trophies came back only rarely after that: the league championship in 1966, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1997 and 2015, the Memorial Cup in 1990 and 2015, for totals of 13 and five.

Eric Lindros wore the sweater from 1989 to 1991 before going first overall to Quebec. Marc Savard, whose number 27 also hangs in the rafters, left as the club's all-time scoring leader. Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and John Tavares all passed through the same dressing room on their way to the NHL draft's top pick.

None of that carries the edge of the games against the Peterborough Petes.
