Kitchener's Canucks made the move to Peterborough on 1 October 1956, and for their first decade on Ontario ice the team carried a sponsor's name in front of the city's own — the TPT Petes, after the Toronto-Peterborough Transport company backing them. That prefix came off in 1966, leaving the club as simply the Petes.

What the Petes became known for wasn't silverware so much as output. Steve Yzerman, Bob Gainey, Larry Murphy and Chris Pronger all came through the dressing room on their way to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and a fifteen-year-old Wayne Gretzky pulled on the maroon and white for three games before he was anywhere near the player he'd become. Scotty Bowman and Roger Neilson both coached here, too, long before either man built the reputation that followed.

The J. Ross Robertson Cup, the OHL's championship, has come to Peterborough ten times, the first in 1959 and the most recent in 2023 — six decades apart, with the middle years spread through the late 1970s and 1980s. The Memorial Cup has been harder to find; the Petes have reached it repeatedly but won it only once, in 1979, beating the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Games are still played at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, a rink that seats 4,329 and puts the crowd close enough to the boards to make itself heard.
