Ken Burgess put the question bluntly when he took over the Sudbury club in the late 1980s: what exactly is a green wolf? The team had worn green and white since its arrival in the city, a tribute to the old Sudbury Cub Wolves, who had won the Memorial Cup in 1932 and reached the final again in 1935. Burgess switched the jerseys to blue and grey, and the colours have stayed that way since.

The franchise that carries the Wolves name today is not that older club. It began in 1972, when businessman Mervin "Bud" Burke bought the Niagara Falls Flyers and moved them north into the Ontario Hockey League. They have played at the Sudbury Community Arena ever since.

For a franchise built on a borrowed identity, the silverware has been thin. The Wolves reached the OHL final twice, in 1976 and again in 2007, and lost both times; the Memorial Cup itself has eluded the modern club altogether. The nearest they have come to a global title was in 2012, at the Junior Club World Cup, which they won.

What the club has produced instead is a stream of NHL players wearing its number retired on the arena wall: Randy Carlyle, Ron Duguay, Rod Schutt, Dale Hunter, Marc Staal.
