That 2016–17 run took them to the Memorial Cup final, where they fell to the Windsor Spitfires 4–3.

The franchise did not start in Erie. It began in 1988 as the Niagara Falls Thunder, and only in 1996 did it move to Pennsylvania and take the name of the river otter that lives along Lake Erie. Few junior teams have sent through a group like the one that passed through Erie in the years around that second championship: Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome shared a dressing room there, and Alex DeBrincat set scoring marks before all three moved on to the NHL. Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews came up through the same OHL generation without ever wearing the colours themselves.

Games against London carry their own ritual — the "Sweet Caroline" sing-along that follows the Otters into that rivalry wherever it is played — while the shorter trip to Niagara keeps the geographic needle sharp and Saginaw supplies the cross-border edge.

Sherry Bassin ran the club for years before selling it in 2015 to Jim Waters for $7.225 million; Waters owned the Otters until his death in December 2024.
