Ottawa marked its own centenary as a city one year after Canada's, and in 1967, the country's hundredth year, the Ontario Hockey Association granted the capital an expansion franchise on 16 February. The team took its name from that anniversary and has kept both name and city ever since — no relocation, no rebrand, a rarity in major junior hockey. It played its first game on 6 October 1967, and its opening eleven home dates that season were played across the river at the Hull Arena, while construction delays held up the rink meant to be its own.

That rink became the Ottawa Civic Centre, now TD Place Arena, and the 67s left it only once, for two seasons through the Lansdowne Live redevelopment, when they played out at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata before returning downtown. The club's colours, red, black and white, were carried over from the Ottawa Senators of the 1920s and 1930s, a deliberate link to the city's earlier hockey life rather than anything invented for the new team.

Three J. Ross Robertson Cup titles, in 1977, 1984 and 2001, mark the club's championship seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, and the 1984 side went on to win the Memorial Cup as well, a double repeated in 1999. Denis Potvin came through the 67s before his career at the New York Islanders, one of two Hockey Hall of Famers to have worn the jersey along with Doug Wilson.

The rivalry with the Kingston Frontenacs still gets framed the way it always has locally: the old capital against the current one. Games against them, and against the Niagara IceDogs, are the fixtures that draw the Civic Centre closest to its near-10,000 capacity.
