Paul Coffey played only one season in Kingston before the Hall of Fame career. An original Kingston Frontenacs side, an intermediate and junior outfit, existed as far back as 1897 and took the J. Ross Robertson Cup in 1898–99. That team gave way to the Victorias, then the Canadians, then briefly the Raiders, before new ownership in 1989 reached back for the old name and put it on the jerseys again.

The revived Frontenacs have not matched that early trophy. Twice they have gone as far as an Ontario Hockey League final and lost both times — to Detroit in 1995 and to London in 2016 — and both of those runs did at least produce a Leyden Trophy for the East Division. Three trips to the Memorial Cup, in 1990, 1995 and 2016, brought a fourth-place finish as the best return.

What the franchise has done more reliably is send players on. Chris Gratton went third overall in 1993, Sam Bennett first overall in 2014, and Shane Wright fourth in 2022. Andrew Raycroft and David Ling both won the CHL's Player of the Year award while wearing the Frontenacs sweater, five years apart.

The J. Ross Robertson Cup, an OHL championship, is the one honour that keeps eluding the modern club — 1898–99 remains the only time a Kingston side of this name has held it.
