Slush Puppie Place

The name changes have been steady, but the place remains the same. Slush Puppie Place stands at 1 The Tragically Hip Way, a location that has hosted ice since 2008. Before it took its current title, it carried the weight of sponsors as K-Rock Centre, Rogers K-Rock Centre, and Leon's Centre, each name marking a different era of funding rather than a change in spirit.

It is not merely a bowl for hockey. The floor is a 200' x 85' convertible surface, shifting from ice to hardwood for basketball or curling, though the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) have found their rhythm here since the doors first opened. There is no grand architecture to hide behind; the building is functional, designed by Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects and erected by EllisDon Construction, but its character comes from what happens inside.

The Tragically Hip Way is an odd street name for a sports ground, yet it ties the venue to local culture in a way corporate titles cannot. The arena does not try to be a cathedral; it is a workshop for sport. When the ice is down, the sound cuts differently than on wood, but the sightlines remain sharp from every seat. The website lists the events, but the history is in the conversions — the floor plates lifting to reveal the cold beneath. It is a place that has seen seasons change, names change, but the game remains the constant.

There is no special magic in the concrete, only the routine of competition. The Frontenacs play their home matches here, and the crowd reacts to the puck, not the paint on the walls.
