Highway 17 runs straight between North Bay and Sudbury.

The franchise did not start in North Bay at all. It played its first fifteen seasons as the Brampton Battalion before the Ontario Hockey League's board of governors cleared a move north in November 2012, and the club arrived on the strength of a fifteen-year lease with the city to play out of what was then the North Bay Memorial Gardens. The name stayed, kept in place as a nod to the city's military history rather than swapped for something new.

Stan Butler ran the bench from the club's founding in 1998 straight through the relocation and beyond, into December 2019, by which point no coach in the league's history had held one job longer. Ryan Oulahen took over from there. The deepest run came earlier: in 2014, the Battalion's first season in North Bay, they took the Bobby Orr Trophy as conference champions and reached the J. Ross Robertson Cup final.
