Peterborough Memorial Centre
Peterborough, Canada
The first thing you notice about the Peterborough Memorial Centre is not the building itself but what it holds inside. For nearly seventy years the same team has played on the same sheet of ice under the same roof. They have never moved, and neither has the building.
It was designed to be a memorial, and the name stuck. The architects were Blackwell, Craig & Zeidler, who worked with Eastwood Construction to raise the structure for $875,000 — a sum that would be closer to ten million today. When the Ontario Hockey League side took the ice, the capacity was set around 3,800 seats, though concerts have seen floor seating push the numbers higher.
The 2003 renovation is the moment the place shifted from relic to modern venue. That year added twenty-four luxury boxes, air conditioning, and a new scoreboard. By late 2005 a full video screen was installed, and the concourse began to feel less like a corridor and more like a room. The lacrosse team, the Lakers, had arrived two years after the Petes, and since 1968 they have shared the same winter schedule as the hockey club.
Not everything here is sport. The venue has hosted over five hundred concerts, including performances by Louis Armstrong and Elton John, and it permanently houses the local Sports Hall of Fame. The 1996 Memorial Cup final was played here, as were several Mann Cup matches over the years. The 2026 TELUS Cup is now scheduled for the same rink, the same ice, the same roof that has held its shape for longer than most of the people who visit it have been alive.
