Komarov Arena
Nykarleby, Finland
Formerly: Nykarleby Ishall, Uudenkaarlepyyn Jäähalli
Komarov Arena is not a place where you go for the grandeur of the stands or the history of the crowd. The interior is where the work happens.
The arena opened in 2009. The operating company, Ab Nykarleby Ishall - Uudenkaarlepyyn Jäähalli Oy, had been registered two years earlier, on January 2, 2008. The capacity is 450. You sit close to the glass.
The name changed in 2011, after Leo Komarov won a gold medal with the Finnish national team at the IIHF World Championship. He was born in Nykarleby, and the donation that followed gave the hall a new identity. Before that it was Nykarleby Ishall.
The surface is artificial ice. The rink is small. The boards are high. The lights hum.
Muik Hockey plays here. They compete in the Suomi-sarja, the third tier of Finnish ice hockey. The team runs its own website, https://www.muik-hockey.fi, but there is no separate site for the arena itself. Management is handled by the club. On match days the car park fills up. On other days it is empty. The building does not care which it is.
