Messestadion

The Messestadion sits apart from the town centre, its long, low profile wrapping around the exhibition ground. What catches the eye is not the scale but the skin of the building: panels of copper, titanium and zinc that have taken on a dull grey over the years. A concrete ramp rises at one end, leading to a walkway that runs along the curve of the roof, while the rest of the structure stays grounded, almost hidden behind a line of bare trees in winter.

The building opened in 1999, the result of a project that ran from 1997, designed by Leopold Kaufmann for Messe Dornbirn GmbH. It was never built to host football. The surface beneath the floodlights is ice, laid over a concrete base, and the capacity of 4,270 seats serves the home side of Dornbirner EC and EC Bregenzerwald. The original design remained largely intact until a renovation in 2014, when LED screens were added to the interior.

It is easy to confuse the two venues in Dornbirn. FC Dornbirn 1913 plays at Stadion Birkenwiese, a separate ground with a natural grass pitch and an athletics track, which only received floodlights in 2009. The football stadium has hosted events of a different kind, such as the 16th World Gymnaestrada in July 2019, when more than 18,000 participants filled the area. The ice arena, by contrast, remains a quieter fixture in the sporting calendar.

The architecture leans toward function. There are no grand staircases or sweeping facades; the exterior relies on the rhythm of the metal cladding and the simple geometry of the concrete supports. The relationship between the ice rink and the exhibition halls is practical rather than theatrical, and the result is a space that does not announce itself.
