The most noticeable change came after the 2003–2004 renovation. The original construction cost was 10 million Finnish markka.
The venue is the home of Oulun Kärpät, the city’s Liiga side, and also hosts the women’s Auroraliiga team and the U18 and U20 junior squads. The playing surface is ice, laid on a concrete base. In 2006 the building was renamed Oulun Energia Areena after a sponsorship deal with the local energy company. Before that it was known as Raksilan jäähalli.
The arena has hosted international matches, including the 2013 IIHF World Championship Division I tournament and Euro Hockey Tour games such as the Finland versus Czech Republic fixture in April 2016. Concerts have also been held here, with acts like Alice in Chains, Scorpions, Mokoma, Stratovarius and Lordi taking the stage. The official all-time attendance record is 6,768 spectators, set during the 2012–2013 Liiga season.
