Seshego Stadium

Polokwane, South Africa

Long dormant, Seshego Stadium is back in full training after a renovation that took a decade of planning and turned a quiet local venue into a Premier Soccer League (PSL) ground. For twenty-three years the venue had not hosted a top-tier professional match, and when Magesi earned their place in the country’s highest division, the existing infrastructure—once a safe seating capacity of 5,000—was insufficient. The Polokwane Local Municipality, under Mayor John Mpe, funded the R19 million upgrade, which included a new 5,000-seat grandstand and an athletic track, swelling the total capacity to 15,000.

The official reopening on 8 February 2025 brought a sense of urgency; the floodlights failed twice during a match against Chippa United, suspending the game for thirty minutes. The municipality apologised and launched an investigation, a reminder that the facility is still finding its rhythm. Yet, the decision was not overturned by the chaos. Magesi won their opener 2–0.

Sekhukhune United do not call this place home. Their permanent home is the Peter Mokaba Stadium, though they ran out of options in January 2025 and played a single Nedbank Cup tie here when their own venue was unavailable. The stadium now hosts the women’s game as well, welcoming Copperbelt Ladies for their first SAFA Women’s League match on 15 March 2025. There are whispers of a name change, a formalisation of sorts to honour Kgosi Seshego, the traditional leader after whom the township—and now the stadium—is named, but until the council approves, it remains simply Seshego.
