It opened in July 1927, designed by Giovanni Greppi, and took its name from Giuseppe Sinigaglia, a Como-born rower and First World War casualty.

When Como dropped into Serie C1 in 1990, the running track that had ringed the pitch since 1927 came out, and the main stand was rebuilt around a purely football layout. A second wave, in 2002–04, rebuilt the Curva Azzurra and the Curva Monumento ahead of the club's return to Serie A. The side stands, the Distinti, had been shut since 2016; they reopened only in 2024, adding new seating and pushing capacity from 7,500 up to 10,584 for an outlay of €362,000. A further rebuild, credited to the Populous studio and keeping the south stand's façade, is planned to bring capacity to 15,000 by 2026.

In 2025 it staged the Coppa Italia Femminile final between Juventus and Roma. Deep Purple played there in July 2004, and Jovanotti's 2008 concert is remembered less for the music than for a spectator injured in the crowd that night.
