Stadio Mariani-Pavone

Pineto, Italy

Formerly: Stadio Comunale di Pineto, Stadio Comunale Mimmo Pavone

The Stadio Mariani-Pavone sits in the Borgo Santa Maria Immacolata neighbourhood of Pineto, on Via Provinciale per Atri. The ground was known as the Stadio Comunale. The football club, AS Pineto Calcio, began to climb the Italian pyramid.

The structure changed with the times. When the club earned promotion to Serie C, the old stand could no longer hold the expectations of a professional side. The municipality stepped in to oversee a renovation that would double the size of the place. What was once a modest 1,000-seat affair was expanded to 1,500. During the construction, the club had to ground out their wins elsewhere, playing at the Stadio Adriatico in Pescara while the local infrastructure was rebuilt. They returned with a fresh surface and a harder edge.

The name on the gate carries weight. It honours two local boys, Mimmo Pavone and Alessandro Mariani, who were lost in the mid-1990s. A memorial tournament started in their name, but the stadium itself took longer to adopt their legacy. The renaming was a slow process, cemented only when the modern era began.

Today, the ground is a place of small-town pride. There is a sense that the away end never stops, even in a league where few watch. When they play Pescara, the place fills up. The tension is palpable because there is nothing to lose. It is a concrete box, but it has grown into something specific to Pineto.
