Sydbank Stadion

The club, Varde IF, had outgrown its previous home on Lerpøtvej.

Before the 2007 inauguration, the team played at Varde Gl. Stadion, a relic of a different era. The move to the new site placed the club under the shadow of the Sportium sports complex, a hub of local activity. It passed from Sydbank to Vestjysk Bank in 2022, but the number of seats did not swell.

When Varde IF hosted the Women’s Danish Cup Final in 2017, the setting provided a sense of intimacy that a larger arena could not replicate. The pitch is natural grass, kept flat by the wind that sweeps across the Jutland plain.

The capacity of 4,000 is not just a figure in a database; it is the limit of what the town can fill. On that October evening in 2007, when the Danish Cup tie against F.C. København drew 3,279 spectators, the ground was nearly full. The visitors won 4–0, but the crowd had come to see their local team. It was a match that was played out in the open, with the sky above and the trees beyond the touchline.

Today, the construction continues. The steel frame stands as a symbol of the club’s future, while the blue seats of the existing stand remain unchanged. The surface is natural grass, and the floodlights are tall enough to reach the top of the new stand. The ground is a work in progress, shaped by the needs of the club and the geography of Varde.
