About
The Women's Rugby Sevens tournament at the Olympic Games is a quadrennial event that offers the highest prestige in the sport. It stands apart from the annual HSBC SVNS, which serves as the primary qualification pathway for this global stage.
The competition was established in 2009 following a campaign by the International Rugby Board, now World Rugby, to include rugby sevens in the Summer Olympics programme. The inaugural women's tournament took place at the Rio 2016 Games. New Zealand holds the most Olympic gold medals in the discipline, having won in 2020 and 2024, while Australia secured the inaugural title in 2016.
The format involves twelve teams divided into three pools of four. The top two from each pool and the two best third-placed teams advance to quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals and medal matches. This structure contrasts with the HSBC SVNS, which features a promotion and relegation system with the Challenger Series. The key distinction lies in frequency, qualification methods, and the nature of the honour awarded. While the series title is achieved through annual standings, the Olympic gold represents a once-in-a-lifetime honor.
Qualification involves regional championships and a repechage tournament. The current season includes nations such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Fiji, and France. The competition is governed by World Rugby and the IOC. Unlike the commercial circuit, the Olympic tournament focuses on national representation rather than club or franchise performance. The event brings together the world's best players for a short, intense period of competition. The results determine the ultimate champions of the Olympic era. This approach ensures that the tournament remains distinct from other international competitions. The focus is on national pride and athletic excellence.
