The tournament structure utilises two pools of four teams, progressing to knockout stages for both the Cup and Plate awards. Qualification pathways include Sudamérica Rugby Sevens, Rugby Americas North Super Sevens, and the South American Games, with the host nation receiving an automatic spot. Unlike other formats, there is no internal promotion or relegation due to the four-year cycle of the Games.
Canada dominated the early iterations, securing gold in 2015 and 2019, while the United States claimed the title in the 2023 edition held in Santiago. The event serves as a prestigious continental championship and a critical qualifier for the Olympic Games. This role distinguishes it from the global series, which features the world's top teams but lacks the Olympic qualification stakes inherent to the Games.
