About

The competition is the premier global rugby sevens circuit, featuring national teams rather than club sides. It serves as the top tier of the international pyramid, sitting above the second-tier Challenger Series. The season structure underwent significant reform for the 2025–2026 campaign. The core circuits reduced from twelve to eight teams. The schedule includes six regular-season events followed by a three-event World Championship series. At the final Grand Finals, the eight core teams meet the top four sides from the second tier, creating a twelve-team field. The overall champion emerges from cumulative points across all stages.

The current roster includes Argentina 7s, Australia 7s, Fiji 7s, France 7s, Great Britain 7s, and Ireland 7s. Prior to the recent changes, a play-off system determined survival between the bottom SVNS teams and top Challenger sides. The Australian leg of the series is now held in Perth, Western Australia, after moving from Sydney. While New Zealand historically dominated, Argentina won the men's title in the 2024–25 season. The event runs concurrently for both men and women.

This international tour stands apart from domestic leagues like the Australian Rugby Sevens Championship. The governing body oversees the structure, which operates through promotion and relegation between divisions. The competition maintains its status as the highest level of global sevens rugby.
