About

The HSBC Canada Sevens, also known as the Vancouver Sevens, is a professional rugby sevens tournament held annually in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is a single leg of the HSBC SVNS Series, the premier global rugby sevens circuit organized by World Rugby. The tournament was first held in 2016, replacing previous iterations in Langford and marking Vancouver's entry as a permanent host city on the men's and women's series. The event takes place at BC Place Stadium.

The HSBC SVNS Series itself was founded in 1999 by the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby). The series underwent significant rebranding in 2023, changing from the "World Rugby Sevens Series" to the "HSBC SVNS Series" to emphasize its "festival" format. The series features 12 core teams for both men and women. The season structure consists of 6-7 regular-season legs followed by a Grand Final (World Championship). In the regular season, teams earn points based on their finishing position at each event. The top 8 teams from the cumulative standings qualify for the Grand Final, where the overall Series Champion is crowned. The team with the highest cumulative points in the regular season is crowned the League Winner.

Promotion and relegation mechanisms have evolved. Historically, a playoff was held at the Grand Final between the bottom four SVNS teams and the top four teams from the second-tier Challenger Series. For the 2025-26 season, World Rugby introduced a three-tier system. The bottom four SVNS teams are relegated to SVNS 2 (formerly the Challenger Series). The top four SVNS 2 teams compete in a separate World Championship for their division, rather than a direct promotion playoff to the core SVNS roster for the following season, though the exact mechanics for returning to the core tier remain under development.

The Canada Sevens is distinct from other rugby competitions due to its integration into the global SVNS circuit rather than being a standalone national league. It is part of a "festival" model that combines elite sport with entertainment, including music and cultural events. The tournament features 12 teams playing in a pool stage followed by knockout matches for the Cup, Shield, and Bowl. Notable winners include Argentina and South Africa (4 titles each) for men, and New Zealand (6 titles) for women. The 2026 Men's winner was South Africa, and the Women's winner was New Zealand. The series is sponsored by HSBC, which became the title sponsor in the 2009-10 season.
