About

The Varsity Match is an annual rugby union fixture contested between Oxford University RFC and Cambridge University RFC in England. It is a standalone annual fixture, not part of a league pyramid, and is not subject to promotion or relegation. The competition is a single 80-minute match, played in two 40-minute halves.

Founded in 1872, the fixture is the second-oldest of its kind, following the cricket match of 1827. The first encounter took place on February 10, 1872, organized by representatives from both universities. Historically, the initial match featured 20 players per side, a format that reduced to 15 in 1875. Prior to 1881, matches were umpired by two officials, one from each university, rather than a single referee.

The venue was various London locations until 1921, when it moved permanently to Twickenham Stadium. The fixture remained at Twickenham until 2023, before moving to StoneX Stadium in 2024. The event has faced interruptions during World War I, World War II, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cambridge holds the record for the most wins in the men's series. As of the 2024 match, Cambridge leads with 66 wins to Oxford's 62, with 14 draws. The largest winning margin was 37 points, achieved by Oxford in 2014. Cambridge won the 2024 men's match 56–11, a victory described as the biggest in the fixture's history. Oxford won the 2023 men's match 24–12.

The women's Varsity Match began in 1988 and has been played at the same venue and day as the men's since 2015. Cambridge won the 2024 women's match, while Oxford won the 2023 edition.
