Match report

Southend came away with all three points at Oldham on Saturday, winning 3-1 in the opening match of the National League regular season. The visitors took their time to find their rhythm, but once through, they controlled the contest. Crawford gave Oldham a surprise lead in the eighth minute, but the hosts could not hold on.

Chambers-Parillon equalised just before half-time, then Coker put Southend ahead after the break. The visitors were not done there, with Cardwell adding a fourth goal in the eighty-fifth minute. By then Oldham were chasing shadows. The match turned decisively when Kosylo received a second yellow card in the seventieth minute, leaving the hosts with ten men for the final twenty minutes.

The statistics tell only part of the story. Oldham had 43 per cent possession and five shots on target, but could not convert their chances. Southend managed 57 per cent of the ball and registered six shots on goal. The hosts offered more in attack with 88 attacks against 87, but the difference was in efficiency. Oldham's goalkeeper made just one save, while his counterpart at Southend was called into action three times.

The result leaves Southend third on thirteen points after six games, with four wins and one draw. Oldham remain twelfth with nine points, their record reading three victories and three losses. The gap between the sides was visible on the pitch as much as in the table. Southend's away form continues to look promising, while Oldham will need to find consistency if they want to climb.
