Bangkok United took all three points against Sisaket United in the opening fixture of the Thai League 1 regular season, winning 3-1 on Friday. The hosts started brightly and never looked back after W. Pomphan's double gave them the cushion they needed. Sisaket pulled one back through a Patrick Valverde penalty just before half-time, but the momentum had already shifted.
T. Puangchan opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute, and Pomphan made it two within seven minutes. The visitors tried to respond in the forty-fifth when Valverde converted from the spot, but by then Bangkok had already set the tempo. Valverde saw red seven minutes later and left his side with ten men for the second half.
There were plenty of changes on both sides as the match progressed. Bangkok brought on T. Dangda, Y. Cohen and Puangchan himself in the seventy-fifth minute, while Sisaket introduced Jefinho early on. By the end, both managers had turned to their reserves, but the result was already decided.
The statistics tell a story of possession without penetration. Sisaket held 54 per cent of the ball but managed only two shots on target from eleven attempts. Bangkok had 46 per cent possession yet hit the target six times from fifteen attempts. More attacks and more corners did not translate into shots when it mattered.
And here's the thing about opening rounds — one game tells you very little. Bangkok sit third with three points after one win, while Sisaket are fifteenth with nothing. The table will look very different when the season settles, but tonight belonged to the hosts.
