Preston Lions secured a comfortable 4-1 victory over Brunwick Juventus in the Round of 16 of the Australian Cup on Wednesday evening. The away side took control after an early setback, converting their dominance into a decisive win at home soil.
N. Sehavdic gave Brunwick Juventus the lead in the 26th minute, but the momentum shifted quickly. L. Campbell turned against his team with an own goal in the 36th minute before J. Ali restored Preston's advantage two minutes later. L. Brooks then doubled the lead before the interval, and Preston added a fourth goal in the 45th minute to wrap up the first half.
Brunwick Juventus appeared to have switched off at a set piece, allowing Preston to capitalise on their complacency. The visitors worked a short corner to build pressure, and the visitors saw it out as the hosts struggled to contain the pace of the game. By then, the result was largely decided.
Substitutions began in the 46th minute as both managers attempted to reshape their sides. Brunwick brought on C. Cuba, D. Folino and S. Kamara simultaneously, while Preston responded with L. Campbell's return after his earlier miscue. Additional changes followed at the 58th and 65th minute marks as the game settled into its final phase.
Discipline became an issue as the match progressed. J. Xydias received a yellow card in the 68th minute, followed by M. Basic in the 74th and N. Symeoy in the 79th. J. Markovski pulled one back for Brunwick in the 81st minute, but the damage had already been done.
The result means Preston Lions advance to the quarter-finals, while Brunwick Juventus' cup campaign comes to an end. The visitors had been in solid form recently, recording results against Green Galleon and Bentley Greens in their previous outings.
