Chattanooga Red Wolves and New York Cosmos played out a 3:3 draw in USL League One Group Stage action on Friday night. The result leaves the hosts seventh in the table with 35 points from 22 games, while the visitors remain 16th on 19 points from 23 matches. And here's the thing — you wouldn't have guessed who was controlling the game from the scoreboard alone.
P. Hernandez opened the scoring after just a minute, catching the Cosmos off guard. T. Adewole doubled the home side's advantage in the 32nd minute before S. Guenzatti extended the lead to 3:0 on the stroke of half-time. The visitors pulled one back through N. Cabrera immediately after the break, then Y. Lelin found the net in the 61st minute to make it 3:2.
A. Spengler equalised for New York in the 77th minute, and that was that. Chattanooga made three changes around the hour mark — P. Hernandez, A. Kelly-Rosales and W. Wessels all came off. The visitors brought on C. Koffi, J. Ayimbila, O. Ramos and D. Galazzini in the 76th minute, then added L. Jawneh and M. Bentley late on. Two yellow cards for each side, with D. Galazzini, M. Knapp, R. Apolinar and P. Bohui all booked.
The statistics tell a different story entirely. New York had 64 per cent possession and launched 134 attacks against 84 for the hosts. They registered seven shots on target to Chattanooga's five, but their accuracy rate of 0.27 meant chances went begging. The away team also earned eight corners compared to three, and their 10 blocked shots suggested they were pushing hard in the final third.
To be fair, Chattanooga had been in better form before Friday. They beat Fort Wayne 2:1 and Onex Knoxville 1:0 in their previous two home games, though losses to Sarasota Paradise and Union Omaha had dented momentum. New York came in with wins against Corpus Christi and Alta, but those victories hadn't lifted them out of the bottom half.
The draw means the hosts maintain their seven-point cushion over the relegation zone with five games remaining. The visitors are now 17 points behind the leaders and have not won since August 15. By then, they had beaten Alta 1:0 in their last home fixture before this evening's stalemate.
