Club América and Austin played out a 1-1 draw in the Group Stage of the League Cup on Thursday, with the tie eventually decided on penalties. The match finished 1-1 after extra time, before a shootout provided the verdict. América emerged victorious 9-8 on spot-kicks after E. Lara missed his attempt in the fifth round.
The opening minute brought a yellow card for América's Alan Cervantes, and the visitors quickly found themselves behind. J. Gallagher turned the ball into his own net at the 48th minute, giving Austin an early advantage. Ervin Torres received a booking for América shortly after, at 52 minutes.
América levelled through M. Uzuni at 67 minutes, a moment that shifted the momentum. Substitutions followed on both sides, with América bringing on F. Torres, E. Sanchez, A. Cardenas, and E. Cerrillo. Austin responded with changes including B. Vazquez and I. Violante as the match headed into extra time.
The penalty shootout unfolded with remarkable precision from both teams. J. Rosales, B. Sabović, A. Cervantes, M. Uzuni, and K. Alvarez all converted for América. Austin's takers — Raphael Veiga, I. Reyes, C. Ramirez, S. Cáceres, and J. Alastuey — matched them strike for strike. Then E. Lara's miss and I. Sánchez's conversion sealed it.
América dominated possession at 64 per cent and registered 119 attacks compared to Austin's 65. Yet their shot accuracy was just 13 per cent, with nine shots off target and only two on. Austin, despite fewer opportunities, showed better efficiency with 33 per cent accuracy and two shots on target.
The result moves América forward in the group standings. They come off a run of four wins and one draw in their last five matches, including victories over Portland Timbers, San Diego, and Santos Laguna. Austin, meanwhile, have mixed recent form with wins against Puebla and Tijuana but losses to Colorado Rapids and Houston Dynamo.
