Tochigi City cruise past Sapporo in J-League 2
Tochigi City made light work of Consadole Sapporo with a comfortable 4-1 victory at the Sapporo Arena on Saturday. The result keeps the visitors in fifth place while the hosts remain rooted to 17th in the J-League 2 standings after five rounds. To be fair, this was a performance that told you everything you needed to know about the gap between these sides.
Tochigi struck early and often. Y. Koike opened the scoring in the 28th minute before K. Nishiya doubled the advantage six minutes later. The hosts had been ahead of the game in possession at 66 per cent, but they could not find their rhythm against a visitors who carved them open on the counter. By then, the momentum had shifted decisively away from the home side.
The second half saw Tochigi extend their lead through another pair of goals. H. Shirai found the net in the 52nd minute, and Koike completed his brace three minutes later. Nishiya added his second goal in the 58th minute to make it 4-1 before the hosts were reduced to ten men. H. Teruyama collected his second yellow card in the 80th minute and was sent off, leaving Sapporo to chase shadows for the final ten minutes.
The statistics tell an interesting story. Sapporo dominated possession with 66 per cent and registered 109 attacks compared to their opponents' 79. Yet they managed only three shots on target to Tochigi's five, and failed to test the goalkeeper meaningfully. The visitors were clinical, converting four chances from six attempts on goal. And here's the thing — you do not need to dominate possession to win a football match when you have the sharper edge.
The result leaves Tochigi on nine points with three wins from five games, while Consadole Sapporo remain on just three points with a single victory and four defeats. The visitors have extended their unbeaten run to eight matches across all competitions, while the hosts have lost four of their last five outings. This was a day where the table went out of the window for Sapporo, and reality came knocking.
