Leuven advance with clinical edge at Charnos
OH Leuven saw off Charnos Sosnowiec 4-1 in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League on Wednesday evening. The Belgian side carried their away form into Poland and took control before the interval. By then they had already established a lead that would not be threatened.
K. De Ceuster opened the scoring in the sixth minute, a sharp finish that caught the home defence off guard. Charnos responded well and K. Milek equalised twenty-five minutes in, their best spell of the first half. A. Ollivier and L. Kozielska picked up yellow cards on either side of half-time as the tempo rose.
And here's the thing — the match turned when I. Dekker arrived. She scored in the sixty-first and added a second five minutes later, putting the tie beyond doubt. To be fair, Leuven had been patient before that, probing for the opening rather than forcing matters.
Charnos made three changes around the seventy-minute mark, bringing on P. Sarapata, L. Kozielska and O. Lapinska in an attempt to find a way back. Leuven also reshuffled, with K. De Ceuster and A. Bosteels among those replaced. L. Hoekx added a fourth goal in the eighty-first minute to seal it.
The statistics tell a story of control. Leuven held 59 per cent possession and registered 95 attacks against 84 for the hosts. They had more shots on target, though their accuracy sat at just 31 per cent — four from thirteen attempts. Charnos were more precise at 71 per cent, five from seven, but the difference in volume told the tale.
The result leaves Leuven in a strong position for the next round. Charnos will need a significant turnaround if they are to progress. The gap in quality showed through in the decisive moments, and that is what separates these two sides at this stage.
