Kitakyushu defeated Iwaki 1:0 in the Round of 128 of the J-League Cup on 2 September 2026. The hosts held on for a narrow victory that sent them through to the next stage. M. Fukaminato and R. Nakayama in the 74th minute, then R. Kanzawa and T. Sera in the 80th. They came from behind in nothing, but could not find an equaliser.
The statistics tell a straightforward story. Kitakyushu registered three shots on target to Iwaki's two, while the visitors had more free kicks (11 to 13) and goal kicks (14 to 8). Both teams were booked twice in total, though the data shows only one yellow for Iwaki and two for Kitakyushu. The hosts threw in 28 times compared with 16 for the away side.
What this means is that Kitakyushu progress while Iwaki's cup campaign ends. The hosts had lost three of their last five matches before this one, including defeats to Okinawa and Yokohama.
