Match report

Sheffield Wednesday moved to the summit of League One with a 2-1 win at Leyton Orient on Saturday. The visitors took control early, scoring twice inside the first quarter of an hour before the hosts found a way back. The result means Wednesday now sit five points clear at the top, while Orient remain mid-table after five games.

C. Slattery gave the hosts the lead in the 19th minute, a moment of calm in an open start. But Sheffield Wednesday responded quickly — J. Olowu levelled just seven minutes later before the visitors took the advantage with J. Lowe's penalty in the 66th. The away side held their nerve after the hosts pushed forward, though they never quite pulled off a sustained pressure.

T. Onyango came on for Orient in the 14th minute, a change that seemed to energise the home side. But the crucial shift came when Z. Obiero was substituted in the 73rd — the replacement arrived as the game was settling into its final shape. Three yellow cards landed before half-time, suggesting tensions were rising as Orient searched for an equaliser.

Orient dominated possession at 52 per cent and completed 302 passes, but their nine shots only produced three on target. Sheffield Wednesday were more clinical — 12 attempts, five on target, and two goals. Both sides created similar numbers of big chances, three and four respectively, but the visitors converted when it mattered. The shots accuracy figures tell the story: 0.30 for the hosts, 0.33 for the visitors.

The win takes Sheffield Wednesday to 12 points from five matches, their only loss coming against Oldham away from home. Leyton Orient sit ninth with seven points, having lost two of their last three league games. The gap between them now feels wider than the table suggests — Wednesday are playing at a different level.
