Montedio Yamagata defeated Tochigi City 2-0 in the opening round of the J-League 2 regular season on Sunday. A. S. Disaro opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the twentieth minute before R. Kawana sealed the result with a late strike in the ninety-fourth minute. The hosts dominated possession at 57 per cent and finished with more attacks than their visitors.
Disaro's penalty came after Tochigi's A. Simmons was sent off in the thirty-sixth minute, leaving the guests with ten men for the remainder of the contest. The red card shifted the balance of the match, though both sides registered five shots on target throughout the ninety minutes.
Montedio made six substitutions across the second half, bringing on Y. Koike, A. S. Disaro, S. Kokubu, T. Mori, R. Okui and Pedro Augusto. Tochigi responded with two changes, introducing S. Doi and Pedro Augusto's fellow replacement in the closing stages.
The statistics tell a story of control without conversion. Montedio launched 87 attacks compared to 71 from Tochigi, but neither side could capitalise on their opportunities beyond the two goals scored. The hosts also won more throw-ins, 20 to 23, though the guests earned 13 free kicks to Montedio's eight.
Both sides arrive in the new campaign with identical records from five matches — three wins, two defeats and nine points. Tochigi sit fifth while Montedio occupy seventh place, a gap that could tighten if results continue on this trajectory.
