Match report

Oxford United played Milton Keynes Dons in the first match of the League One regular season on 15 August 2026, and the game finished 2:2 after a late flurry of goals. Both sides had been searching for a win through the pre-season, and this result leaves Oxford on seven points from four games while MK Dons sit on four from five.

M. Harris gave Oxford the lead in the twentieth minute, and to be fair that was the moment Étienne Gagnon remembers when watching the replay. C. Goode levelled for MK Dons nine minutes later, then A. Collins put Oxford ahead again in the thirty-fourth. By then the visitors had already been out-attacked, with 98 attacks to their hosts' 81, but they refused to go away.

Things came to a head late on when C. Brown scored twice in stoppage time. The first arrived in the ninetieth minute and the second five minutes after that, cancelling out Collins' earlier strike. Oxford had been in control for much of the second half, but two late goals changed everything.

Oxford United dominated possession at 63 per cent and completed 287 passes compared to MK Dons' 128. They created two big chances and registered four shots on target, while the visitors managed six shots on target with a similar number of big chances. It was a case where the more aggressive side — MK Dons with 98 attacks — failed to convert their energy into goals until the dying moments.

There were five yellow cards in total: Marvin Ekpiteta and Charlie Goode for Oxford, Cameron Brannagan, Mark Harris and Jay Matete for MK Dons. Oxford made three substitutions, bringing on J. McDonnell, S. Nombe and D. Barlaser, while MK Dons introduced B. Spencer, S. Dembele and C. Goode.

The draw keeps Oxford United in tenth place with a clear gap over the bottom half, though they have played one game fewer than MK Dons. For the visitors, a fourth draw in five matches suggests they are hard to beat but still searching for a win.
