Match report

Salford City and Shrewsbury met in the Round of 128 of the League Cup on Friday evening, and what looked like a straightforward knockout tie dissolved into something far more complicated. The match finished 1-1 after extra time before Shrewsbury won 4-2 on penalties. It was the sort of result that makes you look at the fixture list differently.

Salford started with more purpose, controlling the tempo through the opening half. But they were undone by a moment of quality from Shrewsbury's J. Davison just before the break. Forty-seven minutes and he had already shifted the balance. M. Butcher had picked up a yellow card earlier, and the hosts were growing increasingly frustrated as Shrewsbury organised themselves defensively.

The second half brought chaos. Stubbs received a second yellow card in the seventy-fourth minute, and suddenly Shrewsbury were down to ten men. K. Malcolm equalised for Salford in the seventy-eighth, and for a while it looked like the hosts might find a winner. And here's the thing about these games — you never know when they're over. W. Aimson's dismissal five minutes from the end of normal time ensured extra time was inevitable.

Extra time produced nothing of note, which meant the shootout. Salford missed first through Langstaff, Sang did the same for Shrewsbury, and then Grant and Gbode both scored. Powell and Turner-Cooke added to the tally, and then the misses started to pile up. By then the tension had settled into something mechanical. Oluwo and Boyle found the net for their respective sides, and Jude-Boyd's penalty in the eighth round was enough to send Shrewsbury through.

The statistics tell an interesting story. Salford dominated possession at 72 per cent and registered 2.19 expected goals compared to Shrewsbury's 0.92. They created more chances, moved the ball further into the final third, and generally controlled the game. But they were left flat-footed when it mattered. Shrewsbury, with fewer passes and less possession, simply took their opportunities and survived the shootout.

The result means Shrewsbury progress to the next round of the competition. Salford's recent form — including a 4-1 victory over Manchester United — suggested they would be competitive, and they were for most of the match. The old head settled them down in the shootout, and that's what counts.
