Eintracht Frankfurt dismantle Saint-Thomas in DFB Cup rout
Saint-Thomas and Eintracht Frankfurt met in the Round of 64 of the German Cup on Thursday evening at the Stadion der Jugendsportanlage St. Tonis, with the visitors running away with an 11-0 victory. By then it was already clear this would not be a contest, but the scoreline still feels like a one-sided affair.
And here's the thing — Frankfurt opened the scoring in the fourth minute through J. Burkardt, who was already making himself known. The visitors kept coming: R. Koch added a second in the tenth, A. Amaimouni made it three by the seventeenth, and Burkardt doubled his tally in the twenty-ninth.
To be fair, Saint-Thomas rarely looked like they could respond. C. Uzun scored twice in quick succession in the thirty-fourth and thirty-sixth minutes, Burkardt completed his hat-trick in the forty-first, and E. Baum finally found the net in the forty-fourth. The half ended with Y. Ebnoutalib and M. Gotze adding two more before the break.
That meant seven goals by half-time, and the second period brought no relief for the hosts. F. Chaibi scored in the eighty-seventh minute to make it eleven, while Frankfurt made several changes — Burkardt, Gotze, Koch and Heffungs all came off in the sixty-ninth, Amaimouni was replaced in the eighty-fourth and Hiro came on in the eighty-sixth.
The statistics tell you everything you need to know. Frankfurt had 75 per cent possession against 25, created 10 big chances to Saint-Thomas's one, and registered 19 shots on target compared to none from the home side. Expected goals sat at 5.59 for Frankfurt against 0.24, and they completed 591 passes to 153.
Saint-Thomas managed only one shot on target all match and created a single big chance, while Frankfurt completed 239 passes into the final third. The home side made 36 clearances and 18 tackles, but it made little difference against a side that had already scored seven before the interval.
For Frankfurt this was a comfortable progression, though their recent results suggest inconsistency — a 7-0 loss to Brentford on 15 August, followed by five consecutive wins. Saint-Thomas have not won any of their last five matches, with defeats to Fortuna Düsseldorf II, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Bocholt among them.
