St Gallen claimed a 3-1 win against Sheriff Tiraspol in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League on Wednesday evening. The Swiss side came from behind to take control after the interval, scoring three goals in the closing half-hour. The result puts them firmly on course for the next stage of European competition.
Sheriff took the lead through L. Frokaj in the 70th minute, but the momentum shifted almost immediately. A. Hunziker had given St Gallen the advantage just seven minutes earlier, and the visitors doubled their lead when J. Pineda found the net in the 89th minute. C. Witzig added the final touch with a late goal in stoppage time to seal the victory.
Both managers made several changes during the second half, looking to shift the tempo. V. Fratea and E. Owusu were both introduced at the break, while Sheriff brought on D. Forov and J. Asprilla Moreno in quick succession. St Gallen responded with L. Gortler and L. Daschner coming off the bench, though the substitutions came after the decisive goals had already been scored.
The statistics tell a straightforward story of dominance without necessarily reflecting the match's rhythm. St Gallen held 68 per cent possession and registered 132 attacks compared to Sheriff's 60, yet their shots on target were fewer at five to seven. They created two big chances against one, and their expected goals figure of 3.13 mirrors the three they actually scored. Sheriff, by contrast, drew 32 aerial duels—equal to their opponents—but could only convert 1.81 expected goals into a single strike.
For Sheriff, the result follows a mixed run of form. They beat Bălţi 5-1 on their last outing but have lost twice to Maccabi Tel Aviv in this campaign, including a heavy 5-0 defeat. St Gallen, meanwhile, arrived in Moldova after beating Vaduz 3-2 and have shown they can compete with higher-calibre opposition, notably taking points from Benfica in a 2-1 win earlier this month.
