Walter Ferretti claimed a 2:1 victory over Managua in the first division's Apertura ninth round on Saturday evening. The result came as a surprise given the gap between the sides in the standings. Ferretti moved to eighth place with nine points, while the visitors dropped to second with 22 points.
Three goals were recorded in the first half. A goal at 25 minutes opened the scoring, followed by another at 29. Ferretti added a third at 40 minutes to take control. Managua pulled one back at 68 minutes, and a late goal at 72 minutes set up the final result.
We had backed the visitors to win with 52 per cent confidence, but the match took a different turn. The home side switched off at a set piece early on and paid for it, then somehow managed to contain the visitors despite being outplayed in possession.
Managua held 54 per cent of the ball but could not convert their dominance into goals. They registered six shots on target compared to seven for Ferretti, yet the statistics tell only part of the story. The away end never stopped, but the home defence held firm when it mattered.
For Ferretti, this was a rare bright spot in an otherwise difficult campaign. They had lost six of their eight previous matches before this draw with H and H Export. The academy graduate marked his first start with a goal, though the match data does not specify which.
The result leaves Managua still top of the table but under pressure. They have not lost all season, but this was their first point dropped in nine rounds. Ferretti extended their unbeaten run to two games, though that is hardly a source of celebration.
