T. Lonergan doubled the lead fifty minutes in, capitalising on a moment of hesitation. By then O. Denham had already bundled an own goal past his own keeper, giving Waterford a cushion they would not relinquish. The visitors were man-marked into isolation for large stretches of the second half.

The visitors launched 111 attacks but could not test the goalkeeper, while Waterford's four attempts on goal were enough to seal victory.
Recent form makes the result less surprising. Waterford arrived with three wins and a draw from their last five matches, including a 2:0 victory over St Patrick's Athletic. Sligo Rovers had lost four of those same fixtures, including a heavy 0:3 defeat to Bohemians.
