Northampton's Phil Dowson Warns Saints Against Complacency

Northampton coach Phil Dowson has warned his players against complacency as the Saints go after a third Premiership title in four years. Nobody has defended the English crown since Saracens in 2019, shortly before the salary cap small print intervened.

Robert Kitson notes in The Guardian that the trend runs the other way. According to the statistician Russ Petty, three of the past six champions had finished sixth or lower the season before. Northampton themselves came eighth in 2024-25.

Dowson said: "We have to be mindful of complacency and saying, 'We won the league last year doing this, all we need to do is do this again.' When actually the key is, 'What do we have to develop?'"

Kitson, who watched the Saints train recently, expects them to be fine if early-season injuries allow. He points to Dowson and his coaching partner Sam Vesty, who have worked closely with the club's performance psychologist Oli Dixon. He also singles out Henry Pollock, who he says looks hungry for more after re-signing for Northampton.

The Saints beat Exeter Chiefs in the final in June, and rivals have tipped them to keep the title as the new season begins. Dowson's own talk is of development, not repetition. Ed Prowse's move from tighthead prop to second row under Dowson, reported here on 23 September, is one example of that approach.

If the Saints hold that line, the history of failed defences may matter less than it seems. If they slip into repeating last year's methods, it is the pattern Dowson has named himself.
