Lawrence Dallaglio to auction 2003 World Cup medal
The bankrupt former England captain is selling his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner's medal, estimated at £50,000-£80,000, plus other career memorabilia.
Lawrence Dallaglio is putting his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner's medal up for auction, with an estimate of £50,000 to £80,000.
The sale comes amid financial troubles for the former England captain, who was declared bankrupt last year after running up hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt to HM Revenue and Customs and other creditors.
The medal goes under the hammer at Budds in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Dallaglio was presented with it on 22 November 2003 in Sydney, after England beat host nation Australia 20-17 in extra time in the World Cup final, settled by Jonny Wilkinson's drop goal.
"It was presented to Dallaglio on November 22, 2003 in Sydney, following victory in the Rugby World Cup final against host nation Australia. England defeated Australia 20-17 after extra time. It was the pinnacle of world rugby and the singular greatest achievement in English rugby," Budds said of the medal.
The World Cup medal is not the only piece going to auction. Dallaglio's runners-up medal from the 2007 final, lost to South Africa, carries an estimate of £10,000. His 2003 Six Nations winner's medal is valued at £5,000, his British and Irish Lions cap at £5,500 and his England cap at £8,000. Individual awards from two European Cups and three league titles won with Wasps are each estimated at £8,000. Together, the collection could fetch as much as £180,000.
Dallaglio won 85 caps for England between 1995 and 2007, went on three Lions tours and retired from playing in 2008, since when he has worked as a pundit.
